This is a large petrol hydraulic log splitter that sits on its own registered, WoF’d trailer. Hitch it to your car, tow it to the woodpile, and split horizontally or vertically — hire it from our Pinehill yard on Auckland’s North Shore.
It’s built for big rounds and big volumes — the jobs where a small splitter struggles and an axe means a very long weekend. Put the axe down for:

Yes — it’s built to be towed.
A log splitter is simple to use, and a few basics keep it that way.
It comes down to the size of your logs and how much you’re splitting. More splitting force handles thicker, harder and greener wood; small branches around 200mm don’t need much force at all.
| Small 7-tonne splitter | Large 37-tonne splitter | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Smaller, dry logs and occasional domestic use | Big rounds, green wood, large volumes |
| Power | Electric (single phase) | Petrol — no power needed |
| Max log size | 400mm long, 250mm diameter | 550mm long |
| Moving it | 78kg, on wheels | Tows on its own trailer |
| Hire from | $55 half day / $70 day / $280 week | $145 half day / $195 day / $850 week |
Use horizontal for logs you can comfortably lift onto the beam, and vertical for heavy rounds you’d rather not lift — just roll them into place. Switching between modes takes a few seconds.
How much does it cost to hire a log splitter in Auckland?
Our large 37-tonne splitter is $145 for a half day, $195 for a full day or $850 for a week, including GST. Our small 7-tonne electric splitter starts at $55 for a half day.
Can I tow it behind my car?
Yes. It’s on its own registered trailer, and the multi-hitch fits both 50mm and 1 7/8″ towballs.
How fast can I tow it?
The maximum towing speed is 72km/h.
How long can the logs be?
Up to 550mm long.
Will it split green or wet wood?
Yes — green wood is where the extra splitting force pays off. Just remember freshly split green wood needs time to dry before it burns well.
Is there a deposit?
Yes, two full days’ hire ($390).
When’s the best time to split firewood?
Spring or summer, so it has the warmer months to dry before winter.
